Historical Hotel and Spa Overlooking San Francisco Bay
The Claremont Hotel & Spa-a historical, AAA Four Diamond Award-winning hotel-overlooks the San Francisco Bay from a perch atop the Claremont Canyon. During the California gold rush, a private, English-style castle stood on the property. But after the castle burned down, real estate tycoon Frank Havens won the land in a game of checkers, and in 1915, he opened the sprawling Mediterranean-style resort that still stands today.
Of the many improvements made to the hotel over the years, none shine as brightly as the Spa Claremont, a 20,000-square-foot facility dubbed the Top U.S. Urban Spa by Vogue magazine. Beyond offering standard therapeutics such as facials and massages, the spa's staff administers body treatments, acupuncture, and water therapy, a means of relieving stress by wielding a seltzer bottle à la the Three Stooges. At the hotel's fitness center, 60 exercise classes are scheduled every week. There are 10 tennis courts onsite and a number of swimming pools, whirlpools, hot tubs, and saunas.
Three restaurants provide a range of fine-dining options. The landmark Meritage at the Claremont, a farm-to-table affair, serves dishes such as the Sonoma goat-cheese-potato terrine beneath a two-story ceiling while diners gaze out onto the bay. The more casual Paragon Restaurant-an American brasserie-offers hand-shaken cocktails, live jazz on the weekends, and outdoor deck seating. The Bayview Cafe serves up light fare poolside. Upstairs, the hotel's Distinctive Bay View rooms have been newly renovated so that no two are exactly alike.
Berkeley, California: Eclectic College Town Full of Art, History, and CultureThe Claremont Hotel & Spa stands just a few minutes from the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, home to some 36,000 students and a still-thriving activist spirit. Lined with cafes and smoke shops, colorful Telegraph Avenue bustles with scholars, bohemians, and vendors hawking tie-dyed graduation gowns.
World-famous musicians and actors take the stage at Hertz and Zellerbach Halls and the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, and plenty of bars and restaurants along Shattuck Avenue pour microbrews and serve farm-to-table cuisine. Wandering Berkeley's residential neighborhoods can be a charming diversion in the spring and summer, when tangled gardens spill over onto tree-lined sidewalks.

Sumptuous Accommodations amid Mountain Terrain
The Resort at Squaw Creek's golf course looks out over lush prairies and mountainsides covered in pine trees. It's a gorgeous scene in sunny weather, but summer is technically off-season here. In the distance, you can see the six peaks of Squaw Valley USA, a sort of Shangri-La that served as the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. When the landscape is blanketed with snow, the mountains are dotted with skiers and snowboarders. The golf course is transformed for the season into the Nordic Center, leaving it crisscrossed with tracks left by dogsleds, cross-country skis, and snowshoes.
Whatever the season, The Resort at Squaw Creek serves as a convenient home base from which to enjoy the outdoors; it's tucked into the Sierra Nevada on Lake Tahoe's north shore. Hiking trails wind through the property, and on hand you'll find a private outdoor ice rink and an onsite fly-fishing center. Guests can also feel free to stop by the outdoor pool complex's plunge pool and 120-foot water slide and choreograph water ballets in its heated lap pool and three hot tubs.
Six Peaks Grille, one of the resort's four dining venues, serves up breakfasts of fresh fruit, lox, and a goldmine of pastries kept warm in white linens. The breakfast buffet allows you to load up on made-to-order omelets, bacon, french toast, and pancakes.
The resort's 405 rooms and suites underwent a $53 million renovation in recent years. The deluxe forest-view room has a marble shower and a grand picture window that overlooks Tahoe National Forest. In fact, the entire guest tower-where all the rooms are located-is sheathed in lustrous black glass to maximize views of the valley.
Squaw Valley USA: Hiking and Cycling Through Mountains on Lake Tahoe's North ShoreLocated about a 15-minute drive from North Lake Tahoe, Squaw Creek is situated amid some of northern California's most revered scenery and varied terrain. The resort rents out bicycles by the hour, including Marin cruisers for adults, Trek mountain bikes for kids, and tagalong carts for infants and beloved pet rocks. Use these to hop on Truckee River Trail, a gently rolling, paved path that follows a crystal-clear river 7 miles to Tahoe City. There, you'll happen upon a paved trail with views of the Lake of the Sky and access to Tahoe Vista's beaches 10 miles to the north.
Lupine and buckwheat paint the mountainside, and the High Camp here is a nice jumping-off point to hike on some dry, pebbly trails. If you're unaccustomed to the high altitude, you may find yourself easily winded on even short hikes; still, the 1.5-mile jaunt uphill to Emigrant Peak is worth the trip, as you get 360-degree views of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada.
Quaint clapboard buildings housing shops and restaurants line the Village at Squaw Valley. One of these is PlumpJack Cafe, the brainchild of former San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom. In a dimly lit dining room, the restaurant serves seasonal contemporary fare such as the inventive ceviche cone, a feuille de brick cone filled with tuna, avocado, and ginger and topped with chili threads ($15).

Choose Between Two Options $35 for a rum flight for two (a $70 value) $10 for $20 worth of cocktails and drinks
Flights include four different samples for each guest. Rum offerings change regularly, but may include spirits such as Angostura 1919, Zaya Gran Reserva, Ron Zacapa, or Rhum Clement Creole Shrubb.
The bartenders set beers ($4.50-$7.50) and cocktails ($5.50-$12) alongside specialty signature rum punches such as the house punch, a blend of silver rum and mango, orange, and pineapple juices. They also forge monthly specials such as May's Kitchen Sink, which combines Cruzan premium banana, coconut, orange, and pineapple rums with orange, pineapple, lemon, lime, and cranberry juices, as well as a garnish of a splash of Myers's dark rum.
Hobson's ChoiceBeneath twin lanterns rests the entrance to a quiet punch house modeled after the classic British punch houses of the Victorian era. These are not punches of fruit or fist, but rather of rum, the chosen inebriant of Hobson's Choice. The bar stocks more than 120 varieties of this sugary spirit, including Old Grog, Myers's, and Neisson Reserve Speciale, as well as rare and limited-quantity batches. Beneath a line of antique chandeliers dripping with sweet, sweet history, the staff fills glasses with specialty cocktails such as the Planter's Punch, a mixture of Coruba dark Jamaican rum, fresh orange juice, lemon juice, and grenadine. To chase these libations, they also serve food catered by the nearby Asqew Grill.

Secluded Resort in Northern California Wine Country
Along northern California's craggy Mendocino coast, shallow tidal pools corral starfish, anemones, and crustaceans in rocky hollows. This natural scene lies only a short hike away from the AAA Four Diamond Stevenswood Spa Resort nestled against Van Damme State Park, whose primeval redwoods stand in sharp contrast to the coast's stark beauty.
From outside, the main building's wooden beams seem to blend into the surrounding landscape. Indoors, the broad windows in non-ocean-view guest rooms open up to views of meadows, canyons, and forests. Varying room layouts integrate A-frame ceilings and bay windows. All rooms showcase original artwork from local painters and silly-putty sculptors.
In the evening, the cozy onsite restaurant serves a rotating seasonal menu drawn from local harvests. Offerings include roasted brie ($10), grilled quail ($15), and free-range chicken doused in pinot noir ($22). The rotating wine list features vintages from Mendocino wineries, such as zinfandel from nearby Claudia Springs to pinot noir from Lula Cellars, along with international varietals. Mendocino County, California: Pacific Coastline and Redwood ForestsFormerly the shooting location for the TV series _Murder, She Wrote_-which was supposed to be set in Maine-Mendocino resembles a cozy New England hamlet, right down to the coastal bluffs dotted with whitewashed cottages. Artists' colonies are popular on this stretch of the Pacific, filling local galleries with landscapes in pastels, oils, and glitter-coated macaroni.
Although numerous state parks filled with towering redwoods can be found throughout the region, the town of Mendocino sits directly next to Mendocino Headlands State Park. Known for its fantastical sea-carved stone arches, the park offers a home to sea otters, harbor seals, and other wildlife.

Cozy Boutique Hotel in Heart of Sonoma Wine Country
West Sonoma Inn & Spa stands amid 6 acres of Russian River Valley countryside in the heart of Sonoma wine country. The stylish boutique hotel pays homage to its lush natural surroundings by incorporating design elements drawn from the landscape, from its color palette of warm earth tones to the lobby's vaulted redwood ceiling. The inn also seems to evoke the wine country's spirit through its pebbled wine garden, where burgundy-tinted oak barrels provide a makeshift wall for guests sipping reds and whites in lounge chairs. Outside, the neighboring 100-acre vineyard stretches toward the hills in the distance.
As the sun dyes the open California skies rose, retreat to courtyard suites, where you'll find one king bed with a Pacific Coast comforter, either a fully equipped kitchenette with bistro-style furniture or a sitting room with a wet bar. Take in a similar view from massage beds at the inn's onsite spa. There, five massage therapists administer organic treatments ranging from cleansing sea-plant facials to the Russian River hot-stone massages.
Sonoma County: Majestic Redwoods and Scenic VineyardsLocated about an hour north of San Francisco, Sonoma County's gentle climate and rolling landscapes invite year-round recreation. West Sonoma Inn & Spa lies within walking distance of skyscraper-high redwoods and the canoe-friendly Russian River. A 25-minute drive to the craggy Pacific coastline takes visitors to unspoiled beaches where seals and pelicans easily outnumber people, making for lopsided outcomes in cross-species beach-volleyball tournaments.
Russian River Valley's most rewarding aspect may be its rolling roads dotted with family-owned wineries. The wine pass included with this Groupon gives access to free tastings and discounts at 16 vineyards handpicked by hotel management. Many of the local vineyards specialize in handcrafted wines and employ sustainable farming practices. Sample the apple dessert wine at Graton Ridge Cellars, then head over to Hook and Ladder Vineyards to smell the cranberry and vanilla flavors of its award-winning pinot noir.

$70 for metabolic assessment and 12-week cardio plan (a $699 value), which includes:
The antigravity treadmill uses technology engineered by NASA to reduce g-forces by up to 30 percent, drastically reducing the strain and impact of jogging. The sessions are ideal for speeding recovery time during physical rehabilitation or experiencing the thrill felt by Buzz Aldrin as he powered Apollo 11 with his electricity-generating treadmill.
The 12-week cardio plan develops personalized routines specifically designed to improve heart performance. Clients run through a gamut of tests during the metabolic assessment, resulting in a precise read-out of how many calories they burn during exercise. These numbers form the basis of the three-month training, which consists of a new workout delivered by email every day based on heart rate.
SportsPlusThough it may seem counterintuitive to pile on exercises to heal people recovering from injury, that's exactly what SportsPlus founder and president Ed Le Cara aims to do. He's a PhD candidate in athletic training, former frontline medic for the army, current medical and science consultant with 24 Hour Fitness, and is certified by the American Chiropractic Rehabilitation Board and the National Academy of Sports Medicine, among others. Armed with a staggering slew of futuristic equipment-such as the functional movement screen-Dr. Le Cara builds practical exercise routines that help people speed through rehab or prevent injuries altogether.
Le Cara works with a staff of injury prevention and rehabilitation experts whose qualifications include chiropractic and athletic training. Their services range from the expected-gait analysis and massage therapy to get postures in line and ease pain-to the esoteric, such as an antigravity treadmill and underwater chiropractics that give exercise routines to people who otherwise wouldn't be able to work out.

Jessica helms a staff of experienced instructors and trainers who all specialize in one area, technique, or style of horse-riding; students can team up with head coach and trainer Michael Traurig for jumping lessons or trot alongside silver medalist Teri Dosen and her dutch warmblood during dressage lessons. Scandia Family Fun CenterScandia Family Fun Center flings open the doors to youthful fantasy in a lush space that has continued to blossom since opening day in 1988. Much of the management has been on staff for more than 15 years, evincing a love of fun that is reflected in the manicured grounds and impressive wealth of games. Juniper and magnolia trees shade shingled cottages and castles rise from mossy rocks on the two 18-hole mini-golf courses. The sounds of splashing and laughter indicate both the birth of another pirate and a direct hit from a Blaster boat's front-mounted water cannon, backdropped by go-karts rumbling on the Li'l Indy Raceway and bats cracking in the batting cages. Inside, the arcade illustrates the evolution of gaming with more than 150 machines. A limited-edition Tron pinball machine crowns the collection of vintage games, and modern play is represented with multiplayer dance simulators, Quadair hockey tables, and cinematic experiences such as Terminator: Salvation, which screens on a 100-inch monitor. Visitors who left their pizza-flavor chew toys at home can check out Scandia's Viking Pizza.

Emerald Hills Golf CourseEmerald Hills Golf Course strings together nine par 3 holes that test short-game proficiency as players use shorter irons to propel their golf balls through course's frequent elevation changes. The sixth hole presents opportunities for holes-in-one with a downhill tee shot of just 120 yards into a bowl-shaped green, easily replicated from a backyard deck into an inflatable swimming pool.
Golfers hoping to shave strokes off their scores can work under the tutelage of the course's certified teaching professional, Chris Raddie. Eating right, working out, chanting fitness mantras to the annoyance of friends and family -- you're doing everything you can to get your legs in shape for summer. Unfortunately, no amount of time on the treadmill is going to eradicate those varicose veins. It's time to call the pros at Elite Vein Specialists on Post Street: With today's deal, an endovenous laser ablation treatment, injection sclerotherapy, and two required ultrasound exams is $2,800 (regularly $7,200). In this minimally invasive procedure (which takes about 30 minutes), laser fibers are inserted into the main trunk to close down and remove bulging, sometimes painful varicose veins (not to be confused with blue and green spaghetti-like veins, which are much smaller -- varicose veins are thick and often flesh-colored, and appear on the inner thighs, inner calves, and backs of calves). Four weeks later, surface branches on thighs and calves are treated with injection sclerotherapy; and progress is monitored with two follow-up ultrasounds. Here's a new mantra -- say it with us: "I will wear shorts. I will wear shorts."
