To really hail the mighty state, take to the prairie sky at the 750-foot Tower of the Americas, where $11 buys admission for two to Flags Over Texas Observation Deck and the Skies over Texas 4D Theater experience (a $22 value). The soaring centerpiece of the San Antonio skyline offers panoramic views of the heart of our state from a lofty, glass-enclosed observation area. Take your time on telescopes and photos -- then hold onto your theater seat for a theater thrill ride across the Lone Star state, from Friday night football lights to the NASA labs. Like a gentle dragon or the earth itself, falafel's rough exterior belies its inner warmth. Crunch through outer shells with this Groupon.
Choose Between Two Options $5 for $10 worth of sandwiches and salads $10 for $20 worth of sandwiches and salads for two
Pitas cradle falafel patties ($5.25), fried eggplant ($5.85), and house-made baba gannouj ($1 extra), which diners can bury in unlimited fixings from a salad bar. See the full menu.
Maoz VegetarianCarrying a pita, a diner approaches a salad bar brimming with pickled condiments, crunchy vegetables, and sauces. Without paying or even speaking to someone behind the counter, the diner lifts the spoon and festoons the pita with a pile of fresh toppings, ready to start the meal anew. At most restaurants, this could get you kicked out, but at Maoz, it's not only overlooked, it's encouraged. After choosing from such vegetarian and vegan-friendly options as gluten-free falafel and fried eggplant, pita wraps or salads head to the stainless-steel salad bar. Belgian fries-a thick-cut, lightly battered version of their french cousins-and mounds of sweet-potato fries complement sandwiches and salads along with green-chili sauce, mayo, and salsa for dipping and boosting the self-esteem of napkins.
While feasting at Maoz, part of a chain of restaurants founded in Amsterdam two decades ago, diners sit on benches at long, shared tables that emulate the communal lunch joints of old, Mirroring the eatery's fresh, stylish food, the interior at Maoz features green tiled walls and steel fixtures illuminated by hanging lamps and baby pictures of supernovas.

Roomy Cabins and Outdoor Recreation on Bluff Overlooking Lake Whitney
Lake Whitney was created to ease drought conditions in the early 1950s, but the reservoir quickly evolved into a popular vacation spot and was even the site of the very first bass-fishing tournament. Perched directly above Lake Whitney on a limestone bluff, Redwood Lodge was one of the lake's earliest retreats and is said to have once hosted movie cowboy Roy Rogers. The resort has expanded to more than 20 log cabins, but still maintains a rustic charm.
Most of the two- and three-bed cabins have cozy decor-from quilted bedding to knotted-wood walls-and many of boast views of Lake Whitney. But for all their rustic charm, the cabins still offer modern amenities such as free WiFi and cable TV.
You can exchange your resort credit for a paddleboat or sailboat rental and head out on the lake to shoot scenes for the Waterworld sequel. Back at the lodge, there's a fleet of rental mountain bikes tuned up and ready for the trail. Whether your day is full of activity or delightfully lazy, there are few better ways to top it off than with a dip in the hot tub and a session around the fire pit. At the Tiki Light Bar, weekly events include late-night dancing and open-mike nights, and the restaurant (open Thursday-Sunday) serves basics such as hamburgers ($4.99) and pizzas ($12-$15).
Whitney, Texas: Lakeside Town with Old-Fashioned CharmThe small city of Whitney, about 85 miles south of Dallas, is often referred to as "The Getaway Capital of Texas." But long before vacationers flocked to the area, Bonnie and Clyde were said to have frequented the town. Bank robberies are a thing of the past, but thankfully, Whitney has retained its old-school, small-town feel. In the quaint downtown area, you'll find several antique stores and an old-fashioned ice-cream shop.
Many of Whitney's visitors come for the massive lake, crisscrossed on the weekends by sailboats, bass boats, and jet skis. Lake Whitney is known for its bass fishing and also has plenty of flat, open water for skiing a handful of sandy beaches. There are about a dozen public parks around the lake, including Lake Whitney State Park, which boasts hiking trails, picnic areas, and a population of nearly 200 bird species.

French Quarter-Inspired Inn with Onsite Restaurant
Though it's in the heart of Texas Hill Country, Crescent Quarters channels New Orleans, the Crescent City, in both name and design. The hotel exudes French Quarter charm, from its wrought-iron balconies to the hanging planters and gas lanterns. N'awlins also inspired some of the guest rooms, including one decorated with the famous Blue Dog paintings of Cajun artist George Rodrigue and another furnished in festive Mardi Gras purples and golds.
The rest of the rooms and suites carry out much different motifs. The Far East room features Buddhist images against bamboo-covered walls, and the French room channels continental elegance with a fireplace, French boudoir, and life-size cardboard cutout of Napoleon Bonaparte. Some rooms come with other chic touches such as granite vanities and polished hardwood floors, and the two suites come furnished with hot tubs.
Complimentary breakfast is served every morning in the common room. For lunch and dinner, head to the in-house restaurant, Cypress Grille and Wine Bar, run by chefs who trained at the Culinary Institute of America and Le Cordon Bleu. The casual eatery serves comfort-food favorites with creative twists, such as dried-fruit ravioli and smoked barbecue pork sandwiches with grilled pineapple. As a bonus, Cypress Grille and Wine Bar will give Groupon customers a complimentary dessert with the purchase of an entree.
Boerne, Texas: Historic German Town in Texas Hill CountryA popular summer escape for Austinites and San Antonians, the Hill Country of west-central Texas usually enjoys cooler temperatures than surrounding areas thanks to its higher elevation. Among the region's towns, Boerne stands out for its unique history as an early 19th-century German settlement. Some vestiges of the old days are still around, including the bilingual, German-style street signs. Crescent Quarters overlooks Boerne's Main Street-or Hauptstrasse-which features a smattering of shops and restaurants that cater to the influx of out-of-towners that use the town as a convenient home base for exploring the Hill Country.
Boerne is also home to a few limestone caves that have been paved through with walkways and lights for public tours. Cascade Caverns, 4 miles from the inn, features a half-mile stretch of stalactite and stalagmite formations and plunging caves inhabited by a rare and endangered salamander. Tours of the caverns lead through narrow passageways and end with a view of a 100-foot waterfall cascading into a pitch-black pool.

The Issue: Living in a Nursing Home Can Lead to Loneliness
Many seniors and people with disabilities live in nursing homes and assisted-living centers where they have little control over their daily routines. This makes it hard for them to meet the other people with whom they live, potentially leading to loneliness and feelings of isolation. Recreational activities such as art projects can add variety to their days, impart new skills, give them an area of their lives that they fully control, and provide outlets for them to connect with their neighbors and establish new friendships.
The Campaign: Empower Seniors Through ArtIf this Grassroots campaign raises $400, then the Mobile Art Program can visit four seniors and people with disabilities throughout the year, guiding them through art projects. Each additional $100 raised will sponsor another person in the art program. Instructors drive out to the nursing homes or living facilities at least 12 times per year to guide participants through such projects as painting self-portraits or creating clay models. Instructors bring all the necessary supplies and lead sessions for one-two hours, depending on the participants' abilities. In addition to gaining new skills, participants can see their art showcased and earn prizes in the organization's annual exhibits.
You can follow the progress of this and other Grassroots campaigns at the Groupon Grassroots website.
Mobile Art ProgramTheresa Bond Zelazny founded the Mobile Art Program (MAP) after seeing how the creation of artwork helped her mother reduce stress and anxiety during a six-month battle with colon cancer. Today, MAP works toward empowering seniors and people with disabilities through artistic expression, helping them cope with their situations, regain a sense of control in their lives, and develop interpersonal relationships. Instructors drive a VW station wagon to nine facilities throughout underserved areas of Austin every month and conduct art classes where participants learn about the colors, compositions, and brush strokes employed by artists such as Frida Kahlo and Vincent van Gogh and model their own works off of these techniques. Instructors bring all of the supplies necessary for each project, giving the participants experience with a variety of mediums. By creating art in group settings, seniors can simultaneously gain new skills, build communities of friends, and bolster their self-esteem. At least once a year, the organization also holds a mini exhibit in each assisted-living facility, where residents vote on their favorite pieces and everyone receives prizes.

A night at the symphony not only provides a lasting memory of refined musical prowess, it also keeps patrons from resorting to the boring routine of watching the TV boil. Mix up the routine with today's GrouponLive deal to the Round Rock Symphony Orchestra. Choose between the following options:
For $10, you get one general-admission ticket to "From Russia and Europe with Love" on Friday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church (up to a $20 value). A pre-concert lecture starts at 7 p.m. For $85, you get a concert-subscription package (up to a $170 value), which includes the following: One general-admission ticket to "From Russia and Europe with Love" A season pass for general-admission to all 2012-13 season concerts (a $150 value). Symphony concerts are tentatively scheduled for September 29, December 9, March 23, and May 18; chamber concerts are tentatively scheduled for October 21, January 20, and April 21.
The Round Rock Symphony Orchestra reshapes 19th and early 20th century masterpieces in the penultimate concert of the 2011-12 season. As a hush falls over the audience, conductor, music director, and Army bandmaster Silas Nathaniel Huff guides the ensemble's woodwinds into Richard Strauss's Serenade for Winds, composed at age 16 and sparking Strauss's reputation as something of a prodigy and total show-off. Strings sweep in full-force with the dense, magisterial opening chords of Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings, continuing on to a second movement whose enormous waltz occasionally picks up a busier, more delicate countermelody as a dance partner. The piece's romantic energy has served to score several ballets and films.
Schubert's Unfinished Symphony gives a tantalizing taste of the complete masterwork that might have been in two movements of busily whispering strings overlaid with a swooning pas de deux between oboe and clarinet. Darker passages in which the orchestra shudders and exclaims in concert occasionally erupt, geyserlike, from the hushed landscape, which is restored to a gentle glow in the end. The night concludes with the crowd-pleasing thrills of Mikhail Glinka's Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila, which telescopes a rollicking tale of young love triumphing over jealousy, sorcery, and monster abduction. A preshow talk will highlight the evening's music and composers as well as providing a glimpse of the rare bird taught to sing inside every violin.

It's a typical evening at Austin Karaoke, where visitors belt, croon, and warble their favorite songs until 4 a.m. on weeknights and 5 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Nine karaoke rooms accommodate small parties of up to 8 or large parties of up to 50. Ensconced in these private studios, songsters search the computerized catalog for their standard baroque numbers, grab the microphone, and then pour their souls into a premium sound system.

Bel Canto FarmsBel Canto Farms owner Suzanne Wilder has been enamored of equestrian sports since she took her first horseback ride at 18 months of age, more than 40 years ago. Now, in a facility where two dressage arenas, a derby field, and a 75-foot round pen segment the grounds, she leads a team of three regular instructors whose combined experience in teaching and showing surpasses 60 years. Since the facility is also outfitted for full boarding and pasture boarding, horse owners who lack stables or whose stables have been overrun by iguana flash mobs can house their steeds there, selecting one of three stall sizes equipped with a constant supply of hay and water and fans in summer.
